Both activities differ in terms of how much pressure is applied to certain joints and how many calories are burned. The elliptical is more likely to burn greater calories and put less pressure on your joints. People with problems in their hips and knees would be better off exercising using the elliptical.

Walking provides more exercise for the hamstrings, calves, and overall leg muscles. These are muscles predominately used in balancing. In 2014, the elliptical was voted the least enjoyable and most confusing machine.

If you are looking to burn more calories but not have the pressure on your joints that walking or even running entails, your best bet would be to exercise on the elliptical.
